Shaping a world of work free from violence and harassment

HISTORY WAS MADE
ON THE 21ST OF JUNE 2019 This, ladies and gentlemen, was a historic opportunity
to shape a future of work free from violence and harassment… and has presented
you with instruments that are based
on a human-centred approach. Instruments that are practical, implementable, and therefore, ratifiable. It applies to the public
and private sector, the formal and informal economy, and in urban and rural areas. Its scope is indeed broad, but so is the reach of violence
and harassment in the world of work. Every person in the world
of work should feel that this Convention
and Recommendation applies to them. It also demonstrates the value
and the power of tripartism and the role the ILO can play to help
improve people’s working lives. Employers want to see harmonious
and productive workplaces, and violence and harassing
behaviours place that at risk. Nobody should be subjected
to violence and harassment at work. This is really
a ground-breaking convention. This is the first time
that we have standards that say very clearly
what violence and harassment is, that it has not to be tolerated,
what to do about it. [APPLAUSE] The enthusiasm, the excitement which attended
the adoption of these instruments, does testimony to the fact
that they can – and I am very confident
that they will make, a difference to the working life
of very many people around the world. I congratulate you on adopting a Convention on Violence
and Harassment in the World of Work. VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT
CONVENTION, 2019 (NO. 190) VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT
RECOMMENDATION, 2019 (NO. 206) TAKE ACTION. RATIFY. IMPLEMENT.
